I agree that when a school takes up a mascot it is not to mock that certain ethnicity. I am a high school student with the mascot of the Indian. I am one of about 1,500 students that bear the Menomonie Indian mascot with Dignity, Strength, Honor, and Pride. As a matter of fact, "Dignity, Strength, Honor, and Pride" is the quote that accompanies our Indian logo. Forgive me for being confused, however I do not understand how a motto such as ours can be considered disrespectful or degrading. If individuals are worried of having a derogatory mascot, then provide classes that teach the true ways of the Native Americans and change the mascot so that it correctly depicts the mascot of such school. However, to have legislation step in and say that no one can have the Indian as a mascot is ridiculous. It will only anger individuals further. Also if your going to attack public schools systems then the college and professional leagues should be targeted as well. And while were at it, we might as well target all teams with any reference to any ethnicity, job type, or any animal (for they too can be offensive to animal lovers)! Oh! and any plant, microorganism, or living thing must be added to the list as well. Its only fair. In fact, how about we eliminate all mascots in general so that America will never have to worry about being discriminatory to anyone! OR...we could just correctly image mascots such as the Indian and focus on far more important issues. I should be given the opportunity to PROUDLY graduate as a Menomonie Indian.

The use of Indian mascots is not derogatory; even if it was, any attempt to legislate political correctness would be misguided and further erode basic rights. Mark Van Weelden SEEMED to make valid points, until you note that he doesn't know his history; he would do well to find out when the Americal civil war started (perhaps a Google search?), and when President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation - and he would do well to note that the Proclamation applied ONLY to the states that were in rebellion, and did not free slaves in West Virginia, Kentucky, and/or Maryland. People who don't know how we got here shouldn't be trying to guide us into the future!

I know that being white, this situation does not pertain to me, but I feel it isn't proper to have Indian Mascots. People could say that Indians should be happy they are being represented in the community, but I feel that it has become too much of an issue in maintaining a genuine idea of a culture or group.

MWF 10 A.M. Naive American Studies... Although it is impossible to legislate morality, it is incumbent upon society to deal with issues that pertain to the greater good. The outlawing of slavery is one example of this. Although legislation abolishing slavery was met with great resistance ultimately leading to civil war, few today will argue against these words, "all men are created equal and are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights: life, liberty. and the pursuit of happiness." Although I believe that any person has the right to their opinion, sometimes actions are required to awaken the public to injustices in our midst. I think that legislation banning the use of Indian mascots will continue to face resistance, however, I think if implemented, it will raise awareness. Indian mascots are terribly disrespectful and an insult. In the same way that racial slurs are offensive to people of different ethnic groups, this is offensive to many. While we cannot pass laws to prevent people from using racial slurs, we can and should diligently work to ensure that the public education system is not a partner and enabler of bigotry. It is our duty as citizens to fight injustice whenever we see it raise its ugly head. Bravo Wisconsin!
