anyone can photoshop a pier.

but it is very beautiful and gives an emotion that none of the other pictures do. It captures much more than just "anyone can do this"

The first pier photo is very pretty and the most visually striking, but it's in Old San Simeon. How about a photo of *Cambria* on the "Cambrian Community Directory;" we don't need to go to the next town over to find something worthy of the cover. And do we really want tourists visiting Cambria, looking at our phone book, asking where our pier is, and being told it's actually somewhere else, because our own town is too uninteresting to not have to borrow landmarks from its neighbors?

When we use the phone book we use the sense of sight. I think the
Hawk is the best choice cause it represents that. Sight!

This picture does a beautiful job of capturing the peaceful spirit and magestic trees that engulf the landscape of Cambria its surrounding areas. This picture would be the best photo for the phone book!

The first pier photo is not only beautiful, but it is representative of the community. The Directory is called "The Original Community Directory covering the towns of Cambria, San Simeon and Harmony."

Pictures two and especially three represent the area as a whole where as all the others pin point specific locations of beauty. There are rolling green hills up the whole coast where these towns are, and they have that in common. I think picture #3 represents a greater number of the names in the book than any of the other options, however beautiful the pictures and places may be. Does a picture of the Statue of Liberty represent NYC as well as a picture of the whole NYC skyline?

I like the hawk because in years past a hillside or coastal shot has been used. We have so many beautiful birds & wild animals gracing our landscapes here in Cambria & I think it would be nice to be reminded each time I used the phone book to look on more fence posts & tree tops to admire the serenity, wisdom & beauty within all our wildlife on the Central Coast.

This is an absolutely Gorgeous Shot of the Pier! You've got my vote!

The photos are all so beautiful it is hard to pick one. I agree that the pier photo doesn't really represent the area no matter how artistic the photo is. I picked the mountain view but I also agree with the point made about showing more of our local wildlife and the owl is a top notch photo. I'm thinking it should win even though it doesn't have a lot of votes.

The composition of the vertical pier, #5, lends a dramatic flair to a local icon. The lighting and composition are directory cover quality. Though in San Simeon and not Cambria, visitors love walking on and under our only local pier. #1 is not dynamic enough for a cover. #2, #3, #4 are not strong enough for a cover photo.

I agree with the last post. #1 is busy, too much going on, & then with the added phone book title & other text it will look very chaotic. #5 is a great shot of the pier. I also like the minimalism of #4 hawk & #2 foggy tree, there is enough extra space for the phone book's cover text & they convey a feeling of where we live, peace & space.

i don't understand how on a saturday night 200 people would vote. I can't believe this poll. it is hard to believe!!

2009-03-15 17:33:25 ET

Unfortunately, all you need to do is clear the cookies from your browser and you can vote as many times as you want. One person could easily add 200 or more votes to single photo in short time.

So what if I voted for the Hawk 200 times! I think it's the best photo of the bunch!

2009-03-16 03:19:39 ET

You certainly could vote for the Hawk 200 times, just vote, clear the cookies and vote again.

It'll be interesting if the powers that be can identify the IP addresses of the computers that cast the votes to see how many votes come from the same IP addresses

I think the lovely landscape of the Emerald Hills bespeaks the loveliness of our entire area of communities. It would make the best background for the script printed on the cover.

What a crock of poo this poll is. How does picture 1 gain over 550 votes overnight? Must have been taken by someone that works for the paper. They get more votes in from 9 pm until the next morning then the entire poll had up until that time. I cry FOUL...or is it FOWL????

AHHH Cambria, the one way to rig a photo contest for the phone book picture is to put the voting on line. Then anything can happen, as it did here. How sad that some people who were really excited about the contest have to bow to the manipulation of one persons computer. The lengths people go to to win anything in today's world are simply ridiculous. Be happy that you have time to take a photo and have the equipment to make it nice. Very sad day for the Cambria phone book photo contest....

Just a comment.
The phone book is a vertical format
Horizontal pix will have to be cropped and wont look the same,
so,
#2 is neither here nor there
#3 is gorgeous but not dynamic enough for a cover
#4 bird is beautiful but doesnt fill enough of the frame for a cover
#5 is strong and works for a cover

I think it should be a runoff between #3, 4 and 5
one vote per reader

2009-03-17 14:41:16 ET

Wow! Over 800 votes for number 5 in the last twelve hours! hmmm....I agree with Greg

Amazing number 5 goes from last to first overnight. I hope they look at where all the votes are coming from. This has gotten absolutely silly.

Looks like #'s 1 and 5 got part of my stimulus package!!!
2,3,4 must be republicans.

I think only the FBI/CIA can do that. But it's coming with the new admin.
