I find it hard to believe that Animal Control actually picks up 200 dogs a week. I live in Central Park (western area) and there are two stray dogs that I have called about since last summer. Others have called and have been told that animal control "couldnt" find these two dogs. All during the summer of 2008 I called and called Animal Control about a pack of "wild dogs" in my neighborhod. I say "wild" because I saw them go into a neighbor's yard and kill their chicken, they never barked. There were at least 7 to 9 of these dogs. I was always told "we'll try to get someone out there." It affected me personally because on August 15, 2008, this pack of dogs came into my yard and attacked my cat. I was in my house, not hearing any barking. I heard something sounding like a cat fight and went out to see at least 2 or 3 dogs on my porch and I don't know how many in the front yard. My kitten was laying in the front yard, breathing heavily, and died a few minutes later. This was devastating to me. When I finally talked to an animal control officer, I told him what had happened, and he told me he had seen that same pack of dogs last week (before my cat was attacked). I was too stunned to say anything, but my question was, why didn't they get those dogs? If they attacked my cat, they could also attack someone else's pet and possibly a child, such as what happened in the Woodlawn area. My neighbor told me that an animal control truck did come by our street and went right by two dogs laying, in plain view, in the alley. I would tell of other instances in dealing with Animal Control, but there's not enough space to do so.
The sorry people who put the dogs on the street are the ones who need to be picked up, not the dogs.
I agree, pet owners need to be made more responsible, but most of the stray/wild dogs I see have no tags. And I have learned that when dogs run for a period of time, they form packs and become wild. It's a problem in my area, and the frustration of dealing with Animal Control makes it worse.
There is no oversight for the for-profit contractor who recieves over one million dollars a year to do animal control. The city and county must ensure that tax-payer dollars are not being wasted.
