I said yes he should refuse. Reason there was mentioned that it or our unemployment laws would have to be changed. Right now I don't know if this is good or bad since no mention was made as to what in our unemployment laws would be changed. It could be better but I bet it's worse since our governor wants to refuse the money. The more power the US government has that's less freedom for us.

Take the money and remove taxes from food. Take the money and fix the roads and bridges. Take the money and eliminate State Income Tax.
Hate to see you go. You have been very good for this state!

Also remove income tax from unemployment and the disabled.

We should accept every dime we can get in stimulus money. Not only do we desperately need it, it is our tax dollars sent back to us. We need an aggressive governor and his administration to get in there to figure out how to get as much as he can and as soon as he can! I know one city that is making plans to get as much as it can to benefit its citizens. I know many people who are laid off and can't find a job and an extension on unemployment benefits will help them and will be money spent here in Alabama.
Take every penny that we can get! Our people are hurting.....many without jobs, our schools need repairing, our roads are in shambles, our teachers need to be paid more, our elderly need care, etc., etc., etc. How can we possibly think of not using as much as we can to get our economy started, help keep our citizens in their homes......we are our brothers (and sisters) keepers! I remember in the past that we refused federal school money when we needed it so badly and then had to "jump through hoops" to get it later. Governor, don't short change us now! Take any that we can get and use it wisely!
Accepting these funds will ensure that states are stuck in eternal bailout mode and will contstantly have to crawl back to the federal government to make ends meet. Simply put, there are always strings attached when you accept federal money. Here the federal government will be coercing states to make permanent expansions to their programs. What happens in three years when the federal dollars run out?
Quick example: Alabama's Black Belt region (referred to by some as "America's Third World") receives more federal dollars per capita than any other region in the United States. Yet economic conditions have remained basically stagnant there for over 40 years.
No need to go all the way to the Great Depression or even Japan's experience in the 1990's to see why this spending spree by the central government won't work...we can see the truth in our own State.
Riley was voting right along with Bush when he was spending trillions getting us into this shape and now he wants to complain when someone is trying to help people who need it, instead of his and Bushes rich cronnies
Ann,
Sounds like you've fallen victim to Obama's "There is a free lunch as long as you vote for me" rhetoric. Obama or any of his "Democrat royalty" aren't helping anybody because they conveniently escape paying the taxes that fund the MASSIVE checks that they write.
What great sensitive people these are...spend TRILLIONS of dollars of other peoples' money on programs that won't help! And mortgage our childrens' futures in the process.
No Ann, there is no such thing as a free lunch.
Think about the people who really need help right now - the unemployed. We should not refuse help from the federal government, after all we do send them a lot of our tax dollars. If we can help the unemployed with additional money, it will not only help them feed their families and pay their bills, that money will be spent in Alabama. It seems like a "win-win" situation. After all the money Mr. Bush poured into the banks and Wall Street, I think it's time that we help the average American. Take the money and use it wisely!
There will be a lot of "strings" attached, to the money that are not in plain view. In the long run, we will be sorry for accepting the funds. No free lunch!!! In a socialistic government, as we are slowly but surely approaching, what is given, can also be taken away.
