I feel it is the most disrespectful comment about our president. And I feel the person should be fired!

President Obama DIDN'T write this bill!!! Big misconception!! Maybe people should look in to who really wrote the bill and they will see why there is so much crap in it. The way I see it, the cartoon compares the authors to wild animals.

This cartoon should infuriate everyone. It was on a page, directly across from a picture of President Obama signing the bill. Of course anyone can infer from that the cartoon is the President. It is his bill, and even though he didn't actually write it, he campaigned about this idea many times. IMUS was fired over a racist remark, so in this case I hope there will be enough outrage to cause people to boycott the paper and it's sponsors. I thought we were past this, but apparently we are not. What is disconcerning, is that the Religious right and the Shawn Hannerties of this world, see nothing wrong with it.

I wonder what would happen if he had made this a cartoon about the Republicans and put another caption on it. What do you think would be done?

It shouldn't matter if the cartoon is racist or not. Especially when what is or isn't offensive is incredibly subjective(Just look at the poll to see how varying opinions are).

What's important is our response to things like this. If it isn't racist, then it's just another dumb political cartoon.

If it is racist, then the choice on how to react lies with you. You can get upset, get offended, become infuriated, demand this author be fired. Or, you can accept that there are going to be people who say things that upset you, write cartoons you find offensive, and instead of getting angry, you get active. It's easy to get angry at something you believe is racist, it's easy to get angry at the people who don't care. It's easy to get angry at the people who disagree with you on whichever side of politics you belong to. It's hard to rise above just being angry and focus on actively finding solutions to problems.

Ask yourself, this cartoon is upsetting people, what did you do about it?

They should demand this author to be fired at once, THE---- WHO--Else could it
BE Refering too and if it's Not suppose to be Him, Then how Stupid do you
have to Be, to Not realize that the The Suppose Mistaken ID Would MOST
definitely Occur ..... Who the F$CK is in Charge At that Place ? And what's
their Salary...? *Bonus Included* .....?

This publication was very racial to towards President Obama. True enough he didn't WRITE the bill, but the talk now IS his big stimulus package. SOO with that being said, who else could the New York Post be referring to. As a matter of fact, who are the Post referring to in the caption when the police said "Now THEY"??? This to me only looks as if The New York Post wants the President of THERE county to fail. Personally, I don't like anything about George Bush, but as the President of my country, I never wanted him to fail. This just shows how ignorant and small mined the artist and the editor is. And Yes, I do fell as if they should loose there jobs and others should CANCEL subscriptions with the company.

I don't see racism. I see the paper comparing politicians, obviously referring to Obama, to monkeys. The old saying about "even a monkey can do your job" is being referanced here. I see it as the NY Post comparing Obama to a monkey. For those that are seeing racism, it's only because you want to see racism, and you are only showing your own racism in the process.

Not racist, rather funny and clever. There is no reference to Obama, and he didin't write the stimulus bill anyway. There were plenty of insulting cartoons though in the past, pointing straight to Prez Bush. Nobody made an outcry then? Quite simply: 'beauty' lies in the eyes of the beholder. People see in an image, what they actually want to see.

Hasn't it become clear to you people yet?
Any comment critical of our president IS, by default, a racist comment.
Otherwise folks like Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton would have to go out and find real jobs.

The truth is......... Obama did not write the the stimulus plan, but he it does has his signature on it and when it is is all said and done...success or not.. He will be associated with it. So, it is only fair to associate the monkey with Obama. Every time you hear about the stimulus package, you see President Obama. So, this time instead of obama and mentioning of the stimulus package, there is a monkey. Sad...hidden racism..in America. The problem with the picture is the inappropriateness....blacks have been referred to as monkey or primates in the past. The paper did what they wanted it to do. It stirs up controversy.

If the first thing you think of when you see a monkey is a black man, then you yourself are a racist. Obviously the point being made was that this bill is so rediculous that it could not have been written by someone of human intelligence. Quit drawing lines like this between races. Just treat people like people. Laugh when its time to laugh. It's okay. Anything can be twisted to fit an agenda, epecially when the public has been programmed to be oversensitive to everthing.

Obama didn't write the stimulus bill, he just approved its passage. The bill was written by one of the monkeys in Congress, and that's what the picture refers to.

Al Sharpton's more racist than the editorial cartoon.

Why does everything have to be about racism... You people must be really bored to stir the pot over a cartoon drawing. Boohoo...cry me a river.

The Monkey
2009-02-20 10:38:02 ET

If the intention was there to ridicule Obama on the bill, then it would have been less subtle. I think that the reaction has just been stirred because of the new found victory amongst the african american citizens with the first african american president, and their inclanation to fight for this standing. Obama did not wite the bil, so with the cartoon implying that because of the recent death of the Monkey, they will have to find somebody else to WRITE the bill, assuming that the monkey wrote the bill, who, as stated above, is not Obama, therefore, the argument is invalid, overdramatic and blown out of proportion which, many of us have seen in the recent past, is characteristic of the reaction to any percieved racist comment, especially if it is invalid.

Not only racist but an incitement to murder. The editor should go!

Bruce

Wow. I'm sure NO ONE at the post saw any chance this could be deemed as a racist cartoon. I'm going to write a cartoon showing a man named Rupert "Blurdoch" being strung up by his neck. This in no way has any connection to Rupert Murdoch and any suggestion that it does is just silly.

I agree with Joe... the stupid monkey is the congress, I do not believe it is Obama. People are too sensitive about racism theses days.
A monkey has been used for ages as the representation of stupid humans, one that do not really think and/or use reason.
However, it is a shame that some people has used it to offend black people. But I really believe this was not the case.

I would like to add that Bush was interpreted as a monkey too, many many many times...
Here's just one example.

Did anyone bother to ask the cartoonist what he meant by it? Or did they just go "Bananas"??? LOL

2009-02-20 18:24:22 ET

If you give a thousand monkeys a thousand typewriters, in a thousand years they will have written the complete works of Shakespeare! It's the infinite monkey theorem joked about here...NOT THE PRESIDENT'S HALF SKIN COLOR!

If he really wanted to make a racial reference to Obama, he would have used a Zebra!

I think to deny the racial implications of such imagery is asinine. It is only honest to admit that we all know that the term "monkeys" has been used as a racial slur against blacks. Even if it were an accident, for such a lack of sensitivity to pass review by the NY Post, it is as much of an offense as had it been intentional.

And lets face it. The "wit" of this cartoon doesn't make sense any other way than in its racist interpretation. A new low for conservatives

Dems R Dumb
2009-02-21 03:50:22 ET

The cartoon emplies that the so-called "stimulus bill" and its authors are as dumb as monkeys. People can't say anything anymore without Al Sharpxton crawling out of the woodwork claiming "RACISM" and then wanting money.
You people who make up and support the LEFTIST agenda, are the ones who took creationism out of classrooms and want our children to be taught that "WE ALL" evolved from APES/MONKEYS. Therefor, either way, the article is correct assuming the party you support is correct or it's correct because the "Stimulus Bill" was written and passed by a pack of retarded monkeys who no nothing about economics.

Racism is "VOTING FOR OR AGAINST SOMEONE BECAUSE THEY ARE OF ONE PARTICULAR RACE!" As in 2008/ 96% Blacks vote for Obama.
Now That's racism!

Obama did not write the stimulus bill, so how could they possibly be referring to him? Congress wrote it, in secret, and it was quite a concoction.

Rob
2009-02-22 00:47:11 ET

Wow, Totally misunderstood.
It states that the stimulus was written by a monkey. (Not Obama).
We all know that he did not write it. We know that congress wrote it.

What's next... boycott planet of the apes.
Burn mad magazines

Come on!!!!

Some say this is not about President Obama and that it's being COMPLETELY blown out of proportion, I COULD NOT DISAGREE MORE. OF COURSE THIS WAS A SHOT AT OBAMA! This is just another example of how alive racism still is in our world. Calling us monkey's is no different than us calling you crackers, it's WRONG ON BOTH ENDS. Why did they choose a monkey to compare Congress to, WHY? Why not a vulture, or a pig? Why a monkey? Because the cartoonist was trying to take a shot at Obama on the under. Regardeless of who wrote the bill, we know who approved it and we know he is an African American man. The cartoonist acts so oblivious to what he did and acts like he had NO IDEA this would be associated with Obama. He saw the cartoon before he turned it in right? He had to think the idea up, right? If he wasn't taking a shot at Obama, they why didn't his commom sense kick in and say, "I better not draw that, people may think I'm talking about our PRESIDENT and I want to make sure they have a CLEAR UNDERSTANDING of what the real problem is with this bill." He didn't do that though. He not only drew it, but it was APPROVED TO BE PRINTED! So not even the editor was like,"OH NO! We can't print that, people will think it's about our President and it will create a controversy." They printed exactly what they think of us...they think of black people as monkey's. This is not slavery times anymore and we will not accept this kind of foolishness. No matter how ANGRY you are inside about our President being black, he is still our PRESIDENT and should be treated with respect as such.

If for a moment it is supposed that the cartoon referred to what the "followers" believe in, then actually instead of them it should be chimps protesting against the degradation of their intelligence when it is being compared to that of Obama's.

The Realist
2009-04-29 18:13:40 ET

The only reason people are offended is because the president is black and refering to black people as monkeys has been a racial slur in the past. If the president was white, no one would have a problem with the cartoon at all. So, people need to get thier heads straight, either this kid of thing is going to be offensive or not. If it offends in reference to Obama it should offend in reference to Clinton too, or Bush, the monkey could have easily been seen to represent Bush if he were still president. Would you be offended then? Probably not. Now, was the cartoonist wrong? Yeah, probably. He should have known that using an monkey to represent a political figure whithout specifying who it was supposed to be would be seen as a racial joke about Obama. But that is not the issue, the issue at hand is that the American people are highly inconsistent about what is acceptible and what is not. If it is offensive to have cartoons like that about a black president they should be offensive about ALL presidents.

The Realist
2009-04-29 18:19:44 ET

In reply to Shawna, they used a monkey to represent congress rather than a vulture or a pig because THOSE animals can't hold a pen. And because monkeys have been used in the past for experimental things such as the first crafts to go into space and such. Thus they are intelligent enough that they could scribble and such, but it would be gobbly gook that didn't even form letters. Which is what people thing the stimulus bill was, gook that didn't make sense. The only other logical animal to use would be an elephant, but then it would be a stab at the democratic party and Obama still, and we would be in the same boat.
