I concider myself an athlete. I work out aprox 4 to 5 days a week over 2 hours a day to keep in shape for the races this coming spring. There is diet involved and working as a team with my dad who does the wrenching on my bikes. The work out consists of cardio and weights. Then there is a little competition of racket ball with dad. Then we hit the hot tub or sauna. This all adds up to disapline and dedication. I think this all adds up to being an athlete. You can't be a slug to race the caliber of races I race and perform the way I do if you don't dedicate to excersise and staying in shape during the off season. Plus during the season there is a regiment that I do to keep in shape inbetween races.
