Unfortunately, the question isn't accurate. The town didn't decide to stop plowing. The Friends of Lexington Bikways is privately funding this experiment. The funds are limited and the decision to use the limited resources effectively rather than expend them wastefully just makes good sense. Seems like the wrong question to be asking, because it doesn't take any budget reality into consideration. The town has been doing its best. Adjustments are needed to make it effective.
Maybe plow the margins and leave a "median" of snow for x-country skiers. A snowblower could handle this.
