It says what happens, and it's different. It does have appeal. But what compels to turn the page? Suspense. Or in its milder form, anticipation mingled with uncertainty. We have no uncertainty that she will survive the maneuvers, for she is the protagonist. While we are given plenty of "what" we're not given much"who" or any "why." The writer thinks he/she needs only set the stage. Setting the stage is not compelling.
