Funding for public saftey is one of the core responsibilities of a town / city government. If a property tax is necessary for this protection, then so be it. A property tax is still a vote of the community so we have the ability to control to what it goes to, and to what limits. It can be said that why force this tax onto folks that do not want to pay for fire / medical services because "they never use it". That's like saying we don't need auto insurance because I don't plan on getting into an accident.... Stuff happens...
Instituting a property tax for fire protection would be insanity. Look at what happened when Daisy Mountain Fire took over Anthem. A brand new development built with the latest codes. DMFD claimed once Anthem was under their control, assessments would drop. They never did. And two, do you really think the best use of a $500,000 fire engine is to use it to go grocery shopping like Rural Metro now does? My house has concrete floors, concrete walls, concrete roof. It would almost be impossible to burn down. If I need an ambulance, fine send me a bill when and If I ever need the service.
Tonto you idiot! How else are the guys going to get their meals if they don't use the engine to get to the store. Would you rather they drive a personal vehicle and when the alarm goes off - drive the personal vehicle back to the station and get everyone in the engine and leave? Don't be an idiot.
