  • Raphael - 15 years ago

Listening to this week's entries made me think about the competition since it began. Alot of great voices are no longer part of the competition for various reasons. How do we measure talent, and is it possible to? My answer is no. Talent is not measurable. I say all of this because Mariah's Christmas C.D. is packed with soul stirring singing and classic harmonies, and musical arrangements that really bring out HER best vocal strengths. None of these contestants can match her ability and they have no reason to. They can only demonstrate their special talent in the best way they know how.

I feel that Rocky greatly demonstrated making a song his own, removing the Mariah comparison, and connecting with the music and his soul... and that is talent. The legends of the world, like Mariah, are not carbon copies of another artist, nor are they sometimes the greatest vocalist of our times, but they have all the special elements that speak to people throughout the world in a way that people connect to them. I would like to say that Petya had a great rendition and did a superb job, and it worked because the choice of song fit her style and she didn't struggle. Kara I love your voice and it was a good attempt, but you went flat several times trying to emulate those riffs. Everyone did a good job. Rocky gets my vote for the reasons above.

  • Aryana - 15 years ago

Kara did really good. She has a pretty voice.

  • Bill - 15 years ago

I think Petr Lansky is the best by far. Clear, strong voice...good pronunciation and has that ethereal, sexy quality in his voice that is Mariah's trademark.

  • david - 15 years ago

honestly no one could ever sing the way mariah carey sings or even try. Not christina not beyonce not whitney or celin let alone anyone who is trying to become famous can sing how the one and only mariah carey sings!!!!! But nice try...

  • David - 15 years ago

I like Kara's song, it may not have been perfect but I give her credit for choosing a more challenging number. She could've gone for something easier and all the notes would have been dead on because she wouldn't have had to try too hard, but she she did very well for the song that she chose, it was hard one! I agree she doesn't know how to use her own range to it's fullest potential.

  • Christmas Kiwi - 15 years ago

    Carlos
    1) Great song choice. 2) You nailed that last note with the power it deserved. 3) You're the only guy who didn't make me cringe hearing you sing a Mariah song.
If you let go just a little more, like this performance, it'll sound more relaxed and natural and feel like you own the song. Keep it up.

    Petya
My pick of the ladies this round. Nice vocals but its the vibrato that gets me sometimes. Taper it back slightly and it'll be mint.

    Rocky
Unique style and interpretation. I actually don't think your vocals are bad at all, just a different style to that of Mariahs. Careful not to sway too far from the original is this will be your demise. Someone sign this dude up!

Apart from that I struggled to enjoy the rest. I don't know, I just get a sense of too much safety and not enough 'oomph' or 'guts' to these. If there was a mix between Rocky's interpretation, Petya's vocal ability and Carlos' power I would be a happy man.

Good luck for the rest of the comp. Next round (No.1s) is going to filter out the stayers from the players. Go old skool and you've got my vote.

MERRY CHRISTMAS - all the way from New Zealand!

  • momo - 15 years ago

    Rocky the besttt!!! He rules!

  • David F. - 15 years ago

Ok, so I don't understand why Marie, one of the judgers, commented on Petr Lansky's performance: "The backing vocals sound really great, but at times they overpower the lead." Doesn't she know that there is a karaoke version with those backvocals? He didn't record them...

  • Mariah Ciccone - 15 years ago

Dzulfadhly sounds dreary. Bad pronunciation. Big song to Carey for him. He could have chosen any of these Merriah Christmas tracks:Miss You Most At Christmas Time ( a moodier song) or Santa Claus is Coming to Town ( suits his lesser range and easier to pronounce.)

  • Jesse - 15 years ago

Imma Dzulfadzly fan. Something is missing in that song and I could feel he is struggling but I still a fan of his singing. His voice is like diamond. Just need to be polished... huhuhuhu. Salute the rest too...

  • Rindy - 15 years ago

I don't think none of them sound or sing like or is trying to imitate Mariah. Petya and Kara voice is that beautiful. The men voices defintely don't sound like Mariah, not even close. This is not about Mariah but about their vocals. This was not Dzulfadzly best.

  • Rindy - 15 years ago

Carlos ending of song was good, felt you could of put more feeling in the song through your vocals. It was a good job. Dzulfadzly it was ok but not your best. The energy was not their in your voice. Kara you have a beautiful voice but in some areas you were not sure of yourself or comfortable. Never let anyone see or here you sweat. You did a good job just watch out for the runs.Petr lack of energy in this song harmony was good. Petya vocal control is excellent good choice of song for you voice. Excellent Job! Rocky you use what you have in an excellent way and that makes you stand out even better. I wonder if a recording artist is listening to all this talent because you never know if one of you would get pick up by a recording industry. That would be a great opportunity. Im looking forward to the next round. Im a dissappointed that Abed didnot make it to this round, but he can still sing to me anytime.

  • Petr Lansky - 15 years ago

I´d like to greet everybody here and I wish you very HAPPY HOLIDAYS :o) Petr

  • davy - 15 years ago

What are you talking about guys? dzulfadzly is by far better than the others!! he has something special in his voice!!! Petr always did good job even though last week was not that good! It's not a competition about who could very well imitate Mariah it's a randation, interpretation!!!! petr tries to imitate mariah but dzulfadzly definately interprets mariah songs on his own! and that's great!!!!! For me he must win this competition!!!! even though there were little problem of rythm at the beggining of the song! but i don't mind as he really did great job after!!!!
congratulation!!!!! mr dzulfadzly!!! very difficult to write your name!!!! lol thanks for this moment

  • Joi - 15 years ago

Rocky FTW! Seriously, this guy is the only one that takes a song and makes it his own - and pulls it off with flying colours, too. And I am falling in love with his voice. Trying to sound like Mariah always makes me cringe, because let's face it, you're bound to fail. I like Kara's voice, but she plays it too safe for my liking. If you're reading this Kara, I think you are bound to go through (you've got my vote), and I hope you steps it up in the final - just let it all go girl, you've got the vocals for it.

  • MC Fan - 15 years ago

If rocky wins, Mariah Daily doesn't want a singing contest it's a music composer contest, rocky can not sing, It belongs to that girl Petya hands down, if rocky wins, i guessed it, biased. If you dont' know what that means look it up.

  • WONDER WOMAN - 15 years ago

    WOW I REALLY LOVE
MEXICAO HIS VOICE AND Also Czechchoslovakia's voice.
in earlier rounds,i Love France Abed but now he is no more.

CARLOS -- I love the tone of your voice. I agree with what one of the judges said about your vibrato which is quite nice to hear. You belt out notes really nicely, especially at the end. Nice job.

DZULFADZLY -- This was a tough song to tackle. You gave it your best try, but it really required a big spirited vocal throughout the song, which we didn't really get. The high ending note at the end was a nice tribute to Mariah, but it was kind of mismatched with the rest of your performance. But I did really enjoy the harmonies you added, those felt really warm.

KARA -- Your voice reminds me a lot of Kelly Clarkson's which is a good thing :) On the downside, some of the transitions to the higher notes were a little rough. But I thought you did a great job with this song overall.

PETR -- This is another song that requires a big spirited vocal, so unfortunately, it fell a little short for me. But I still enjoy your voice. There is a hypnotic, dreamy quality to it which was best showcased in your rendition of "Can't Let Go." But still looking forward to hearing more from you.

PETYA -- Outstanding job with this song. I can definitely hear your voice in some Broadway musical. If we going just on vocals alone, I think you won this round.

ROCKY -- You may not have the vocal chops of Mariah, but you are definitely the most marketable of all of the contestants for your originality in the arrangements. That keeps you interesting in this competition. Being a technical proficient singer is important, but it doesn't necessarily make you a star or someone you'll remember. Even Mariah is a whole lot more than just a big voice. (The judges really need to remember that.)

  • Oriis - 15 years ago

That Kara chick needs some serious vocal coatching and she will be amazing. She doesn't know how to use her ranges of her own voice. Mariah will turn that voice to a symphony if she where to be her coach. She is Mariah she don't have time like that. I fell Mr. Heron was the most original it was a whole new mellow tune but the ever most recognizable. His vocal range is very nice and he can hold a note. His type of style is not something I am really into. But Music to me is the Universal Language. And I enjoyed Mr. Heron~! Good Work~!

  • weaver - 15 years ago

Rocky Heron, I have loved every one of your renditions. The judges made comments about your voice not being as good as the others. Whatever, you don't need to sing at the top of your lungs to be good, is my thinking. It is a beautiful recording, that adds a whole new angle to the song. I honestly would love to have a copy of it just to listen to!

  • victor - 15 years ago

Carlos is the best! Since the first time I was impressed, it sounds professional!
Some others are good but not so good like him.

  • Kara Hess - 15 years ago

Yea it was such a challenge being limited to the Christmas album, I wanted to do a challenging song and I couldn't determine if my high notes at the end were strong enough or not but now that I listen they could be a bit stronger.

  • JR - 15 years ago

    Some welcome changes this week!

    Here's my run-down:

    1. Carlos - vocals were a bit shaky in places, but the final bridge (coming back in from the instrumental break) was actually really good. I'd like to hear him showcase more range and less tecnical aspects (vocal runs, etc.)

    2. Dzulfadzly - The octave was too low. This song requires an energetic vocal, but the low register made it a bit dreary and somewhat boring.

    3. Kara - Has an overall nice voice. I would suggest she stay away from vocal runs (which gave her trouble in this song) and certain high-octave notes that she can't confidently hit. Other than that, good job!

    4. Petr - It was a nice vocal with good harmonies, but I feel that this one also lacked energy. A good rule of thumb for these energetic pieces is to record them on a good day, while you're smiling. It may sound stupid, but it really will come across in your performance.

    5. Petya - Beautiful. Wonderful tone and range. Excellent delivery. The only thing that I would suggest for her is to maybe work on phasing out some of her vibrato. Even still, excellent job!

    6. Rocky - He's gaining more and more credibility each week. This was yet another really well thought-out re-imagining of such a classic song. I loved the acoustic feel. His vocal range isn't huge, but he knows how to use what he has - and he does it well. The harmonies were awesome. I love how he is able to let go of the traditional arrangements to make the song his own. Can't wait to see what he comes up with for the next round!

Based on this round, the contest belongs to Petya and Rocky - and, as of now, I can see Rocky taking the title.

  • onix - 15 years ago

this is sad, abed left this competition too soon.

  • Daniel - 15 years ago

I agree, Petya is the one to win!

  • Aryana - 15 years ago

    I miss Abed.
Petya is great. If she has a high range it isn't showing in her songs. She has a beautiful voice and brings justice to Mariah's songs. She deserves to win.

  • Aryaan - 15 years ago

I am really sad to see that Abed is not in the competition anymore. In all rights, he should have won if he continued to compete.
Now that Abed has left, I really feel Petya should win. She does gives justice to Mariah's songs. She has a beautiful voice. If she has range it doesn't show in the songs she is choosing but high range or not, she has talent.

  • youssef - 15 years ago

Another innovative performance from Rocky! I've loved all your submissions!

  • genius3495 - 15 years ago

i think its kinda ironic how alot of the contestants have limited ranges and they entered A MARIAH COMPETITION.. n they are singing 1994 mariah now n her songs wud span octaves at times and i find some one singing her song like 3 or 4 notes for the first 3 quarters n then hitting a MILDLY high note... i did like alot of the performasnces though... i was excited to hear o holy night.. it was actually very good.. i disagree with the judges.. i find the beginning better than the end

  • McLover - 15 years ago

oh no Abed Elamrani (France) is out
i really loved his work :(
