Arlington's budget has been in crisis for decades now. Under a previous town manager, the town always had an annual crisis. Now, of course, the country and state have a real crisis, and the town was wise to set up a rainy day fund.
If anyone out there knows the town will be in good financial shape two years from now, it would make sense to use much, if not all of the rainy day fun these coming fiscal yearl.
If we do not know the duration of the national crisis, and the new Administration's ability to deal with it, then it makes sense to keep some of the Rainy Day fund for the following year as well.
The thing to do is to avoid paying much attention to those who are hysterical on the subject. Arlington has weathered much. It can weather this and still be a town to be proud of.
Easy for me to say? Yes. But a lot easier than cutting off all the things that make Arlington a good place to be.
Herb, my good e-mail friend: The poll question is about the override fund. That fund is one of a couple of so-called "rainy-day" funds the town has. If much of the override fund is spent in fiscal 2010, other rainy-day funds are available.
