I don't mind at all I have no friends who would be stupid enough to install shit on a pc not their own and any private stuff on mine is quite safe. I don't see the problem when friends are decent enough folks! I let a m8 borrow my laptop for a week away the other month and got a fab single malt in return (not the reason I let him have the lappy tho!). I dont care if someone drives my car , uses my pc or crashes at mine when I am not about.I have a good group of m8's and a laid back attitutude.

My computer is an extension of my brain. I wouldn't want someone mucking around in my head, why would I want them messing with my computer?
I keep a very locked down guest account - I had one friend get kind of offended - but when I explained it to him as above, he rolled his eyes and got over it.
Not my problem, they're the dork without a computer. haha
i would share a gf before i would share my computer... tho i dont mind my friends using it if i get a 20 minute early notice and watch their every move

My computer is off limits to all but me. But I'd be happy you let you use one of several others I have laying around. *Mental note to wipe and reinstall when returned*

Euuw, i've got a strange setup that my PC is a bed based computer, ie you've got to be in bed to use it. and if they go on a pron mission i gotta change the sheets.
OTOH the lounge PC is a free for all, anyone wanne try some new software/check emails/surf nasty sites can go there. I ran a backup from fresh so only takes half hour or so for a clean working install.

I am worried people will see my "personal" files;)

i will let any one use my computer but before allowing i will open my virtual machine and turn on my virtual machine named guest making it full screen
Luis - 15 years ago
One thing is that it's your wife or girlfriend checking her mail (and you are sure that your nice girls collection lies in your external hard disk), the other is to have someone who can quite well misuse your computer and navigate to some not so safe sites without taking the normal protections.
For this the good old guest account saves a lot of troubles and does not let them do anything that might harm the system.
pezmanlou - 15 years ago
@lucas Ubuntu does the same thing.
I have a computer set up for visitors to use, fully functional and set up, which is why I get incredibly irritable when someone uses my laptop. It's twice as bad when I leave and come back to find them on my laptop so I always use Ubuntu's lock screen function. It helps a lot.
Yes. I hate letting anyone touch my machine - every window is exactly the size I want, placed exactly where I want it.
One of my pet peeves is websties that resize my browser window - it's my browser, I set the size to what _I_ want, and if their crappy website is "best viewed at hog-your-damn-monitor", they need to rewrite it.
It ticks me off no end that there is no pref button in any browser I've tried to deny javascript the privilege of monkeying with my window. And the ones that turn off various toolbars make me want to find the web designer in a dark alley with a crowbar.

I don't really mind when someone uses my computer, but I do mind when someone uses my account. I have all my passwords saved in Firefox and my account is an admin. One of my friends went of my Gmail and spammed the people on my contacts list. That's why I have a guest account, and I make them use that.
lucas - 15 years ago
macs rule on this one. guest account with hard drive lock down and if you don't know the admin password there's no installing anything. add a keyboard skin for sticky fingers and it's all good

Joe couldn't have said it better. PCs are easy to use and just as easy to crank out of a well-tailored fit. Like an old pair of shoes. Or Levis.

It's called a "PC" for a reason.
mm - 15 years ago
The reason is respect, of course. I respect the people around me, so I don't want them to contract anything from my semen-covered, porn-infused laptop.
Definitely uncomfortable, and more so thanks to the Awesome Bar in Firefox 3.0.

I just dont trust anyone to not stuff up my computer. I have everything setup without any viruses and malware and I like to keep it that way.

I *hate* people using my computer(s), especially my laptop. It was painful enough when i had to let Sony fix a speaker problem i had, but yeah. Letting somebody else use my machine is a rather large deal.
Bastard - 15 years ago
Why? Because I have naked pictures of my ex-girlfirends and I always wonder if I left one of those pics unprotected. Well, that and because I simply don't like people messing with my settings and viewing other personal stuff.
lolwut? - 15 years ago
Also, last time I let anyone use my computer, it got a virus and some other malware :(
lolwut? - 15 years ago
I feel uncomfortable because I have to show everything how stuff works on my computer (very very very customized system) and I'm afraid they'll ruin everything :P
omgJOHN - 15 years ago
I have things set up so that they make sense to me. Everything works as it should and is located where it should. There is not one piece of superfluous software on my computer.
Let someone else on and they start screwing around. Moving things, installing things and generally mucking about. Not to forget that since I'm usually the only one who uses my computer, ever damn thing I use is open. E-mail, instant messaging, everything is right there that this person can go on and screw around with, by accident or otherwise.
Maybe I'm just too high strung.
I hate anyone and everyone using my computer. I dislike it more than someone driving my car.

wahhhh, cuz it's not like I don't keep and incremental backup that I could restore in

You just cannot ever tell what someone will visit or infect your computer with. Its all fun and games until you get fired for some prank that your best friend thinks is funny, like sending a email to your boss or that girl that you lilke at the office.
