We had a church that gave "Chamber Bucks" that could only be spent in our small town of 1200 and the Wal-Mart was not even a member of the chamber so it was just a bunch of local stores and restaurants and wasn't very useful. Gift cards are sometimes nice because you are forced to use them on things you may not otherwise buy. But giving cash and allowing the person to choose is my favorite option.
Our church has a food pantry that we open 2x a month. We serve over 250 families each time! This year for Christmas we are selling "gifts" and all money goes to purchase food. The gift is this: for whatever price the giver decides they buy a postcard which is then given to the gift receiver telling them that a financial gift was given to the food pantry in their name. It can be anonymous (but does not have to be) and the amount is not disclosed to keep it private. I hope to receive tons of these cards this year...
