Now that he's the Coach, I'm going to be supportive of Coach Chizik and the team. However, I'm thoroughly disgusted by the manner that Jay Jacobs and the administration handled the Tuberville situation. Regardless of whether he resigned or was fired (though I tend to think the university paying out more than $5 million when it's not contractually required if he resigned tells us all we need to know), the search was conducted with obvious intent to display to the media and fans that a wide net was being cast including minorities, big names, and up-and-comers. In the end, though, it's obvious that the hire had little to do with a successful track record as head coach.
Whether the other coaches interviewed refused to come to Auburn and have to deal with meddling boosters & trustees, or simply didn't want to work at a place that would show one of the program's all time greatest coaches the door in such a manner, we'll probably never know. What's clear is that we passed up a minority coach who is a true star in the making, several other coaches with winning records in tough spots, and chose someone who couldn't even survive in the weakest division of the Big 12.
Chizik didn't even have to play the three toughest teams in the Big 12. He couldn't even beat the weakest teams in the conference. Baylor put a whooping on Iowa State. Baylor! And Jacobs has the audacity to try to convince us that the Chizik hire was the result of an exhaustive search to get the best? Many in Ames, Iowa are glad to see him go. His name was at the top of every major "coaches in trouble" list in the country.
I hope for the best for the program going forward. I hope Coach Chizik puts a great team of assistants together and makes a run. But, if we were hoping for someone to stand up to Nick Saban in recruiting and on the football field in November, I can't say that I'm very confident.
This has been the most dishonorable thing I've ever seen. Auburn is not the place I attended or the place that Shug Jordan coached. It is not the place loved and supported by alumni who remember what it means to cheer the Tigers on win, lose, or draw. Shame on these non-Auburn people who allowed this to happen. Shame on Bobby Lowder.
Today's editorial supporting Dr. Gogue's absence from the press conference was laughable. I agree he should be at the Montgomery meeting with the "academics." However, it is Auburn University who scheduled the Chizik press conference. Surely, Dr. Gogue could have scheduled the athletic press conference at a time when he could attend. I support the removal of Jacobs as athletic director effective immediately. His poor performance in this and many other situations is evidence that he cannot handle the job.
