I believe that it will only make more congestion. The more congestion, equals the more pollution (noise and emission) . Good luck if your calling for an ambulance, those seconds matter!!!

I represent a vendor of non-invasive traffic calming devices that are rapidly becoming the method of choice. Bumps and humps wste gas, cause damage to vehicles and worse - anyone with a bad back or neck is punished every time they go over one. I'd love to remove humps and have our cost-effective solutions demonstrated! FMI www.radarsign.com or call me @ 678-925-3555

I think that the humps will cause more traffic and therefore more pollution due to the cars being stuck in traffic. I have lived in town for years and since the town added the stop sign at the center traffic snarls in the morning. Not to mention I think the humps do a number on my car.

I have lived in Lincoln for 14 years. I find it ironic that in a town that constantly obsesses over maintaining its rural character, people want to cover the roads with speed bumps -- not exactly a typically rural touch.

The existing speed bumps are already a hazard, particularly in the winter when the packed snow and ice is not plowed from the roads. Driving inbound on Sandy Pond Road in icy conditions sometimes results in skidding into the big bump located on the incline. Driving in the other direction can result in difficulty getting up the hill in snow and ice, since you have to come to a near stop on the incline to get over the bump without damaging your car's undercarriage.

The monstrous bumps on Winter Street and Old County Road are tool high and steeply arched. They can scrape a low-slung car, no matter how slowly you drive over them.

Previous posts have mentioned health issues, and I concur. I had an attack of appendicitis years ago, and had to be driven to Emerson Hospital. I vividly remember the agony of jolting over those unwelcome impediments to smooth travel. While the proposed "humps" might be flatter and less jarring than the existing "bumps," they're all a pain.

For all the trouble they cause, they don't seem to reduce traffic any -- witness the volume of traffic on nearby West Street in Waltham. That street has five or six sharp speed bumps on it, and carries a lot of traffic anyway. People have to drive where they have to drive. Nor can bumps or humps accurately be called "traffic calming" devices. They are really "driver aggravation" devices, and I've seen plenty of drivers express their frustration by speeding in the stretches between bumps on Winter Street and Old County Roads.

The money required to install these bumps and humps would be better spent ridding some of our perpetually neglected streets of their tire-killing, rim-bending, alignment-destroying potholes. The upper portions of Trapelo Road and Sandy Pond Road come to mind. I'm all for traffic enforcement, but not passive traffic deterrence that turns roads into obstacle courses, aggravates drivers, and damages cars.

To the other good comments, I would add that the addition of speed bumps, which are almost universally hated, will decrease the desirability of Lincoln as a nice place to live, and may in fact decrease property values.

Existing speed bumps should be removed and new ones should not be installed. They are dangerous to cars and people. Also, speed limits should be increased to 30mph on all roads currently marked 25mph.

As both a motorist and a cyclist, I'd like to see two things: first, repair of the extensive pothole network in Lincoln, which damages autos and creates hazards for cyclists. Second, police enforcement of Massachusetts law which requires cyclists to ride single file. I have too often seen cycling teams riding shoulder to shoulder, and taking up the entire travel lane of Route 126 during morning commute hours and refusing to line up single file so that traffic can safely pass.

As for the speed humps and speed bumps, it's ridiculous to consider them; I sincerely doubt they calm anyone down at all, they simply incite drivers to speed even more after going over the obstacles.

I hope common sense will prevail in the road design questions, and look forward to fewer potholes in Lincoln.

I am concerned by these suggestions. I am worried that these speed "humps or bumps", will cause huge traffic problems. It will add to the noise and air pollution, and only cause motorist to become more enraged. Some one will not change their course of travel because of these devices only increase speed when there is no hump or bump. I can only imagine what it will sound like when a snow plow hits one of these humps.
Also what about residents bringing their waste to the recycling center? All the trailers and items in their cars will be banging all around. It will only create more noise, anger, and conjestion.
As suggested from some one before, I do not recommend these bumps for roads where ambulances will be traveling to emergency situations.
I just hope we think these proposals through before we take action. Lets not spend our money innappropiately. Lets think about the everlasting effects these might have....

Please, please no more speed bumps, humps, tables, or whatever they are called. They are definitely not compatible with the rural character concept that people work so hard to maintain in Lincoln. They make the town seem like a gated community that says "keep out" and not the friendly place I think Lincoln really is.

I am absolutely opposed to speed bumps, humps, and the ridiculously low current speed signage that currently exists leading into the center of town. I hope the people pushing this can be removed from office, and will vote that way. The town should be spending its limited road dollar resources on much needed pothole repair, repaving, and other maintenence work.
