The story of the summer of 1961, Roger Maris' and Mickey Mantle's quest for breaking the Babe's homerun record.
The movie showed Roger's commitment to his family, and Mickey's lack. Strangely, Mantle's real-life sons were glad that the movie portrayed their father as he truly was, a womanizing alcoholic (as they knew him), versus this supposed "hero" that so many in our society "look up" to and admire.
If you remember, Mantle received a liver transplant months before his death, because of his "super star" status - the dude was still drinking, yet a good liver was given to a drunken you-know-what. He should have been at the bottom of the list based on his lifestyle at the time.
WOW! "Caddy Shack"? It's unbelievable that movie is even in the running! BUT... IMHO the greatest sports movie of all time is "Miracle" about the US Olympic Hockey Team's quest for the 1980 gold medal, defeating the then world's best Soviet team. The work that went into this movie is phenomenal as well... for instance, the actors ARE NOT acting when, after skating ladders they are exhausted and vomiting on the ice! The movie is truely authentic and the features on the 2nd disc show this. (In recruiting actors for the movie, the producers targeted college hockey players, thinking it would be easier to turn hockey players into actors than vice versa.) In comparing the plays they shot for the movie with the actors to the actual footage of the 1980 game, it was choreographed so perfectly that one is hard pressed to tell the difference.
In my book, "Miracle" goes down as the greatest sports movie of all time!
