We have Boxer that we rescued at 8 weeks. Munin is now 8 years old. Boxer's are one of the breeds recommended for families with children. But for a family that has never had a dog before maybe another breed would work better. The first family needs to do their home work on the breed best suited for thier life style. I personally like the working dog breed group best. I have had number of dogs in my life and I perfer then to the hunting or terrier groups. Terriers are almost all breed to hunt vermine, and tend to be very high strung. Many people like the idea of a Mutt, but when you get a pure breed you have beeter idea of what the dog will be predispossed of, health, personlity, energy level. The one thing the first family needs to know about a dog. A dog is a pack animal and needs to be with the family, and needs to know his or her place in the pack. Also a tired dog makes a happy owner. I wish the first family the best of luck, may their puppy bring them all the love, fun, rewards, and life lessons that having a dog as a member of your family can bring!

A mixed breed - rescued from a shelter - reflects the fashion forward look of the Obama administration - inclusiveness. Style is about individuality - what could be more individual than a mutt? The Obamas are setting what will the style sensibility of the coming decade - inclusiveness. Just as Michelle mixes designer with off-the-rack, just as they've moved beyond race, a mixed breed makes the statement that inclusiveness is the ultimate fashion statement of today!

We have a wonderful mini schnauzer/yorkie. He's adorable, only 7 lbs, and doesn't shed. They should definitely look for personality! We love how ours cocks his head from side to side when we talk to him.

A Shih-Tsu would be a fantastic dog for the White House; two would be even better! They're smart, they have hair instead of fur, and are always fun to have around. :)

I have to agree with what so many others have written and highly recommend adopting a shelter dog. There are so many unwanted dogs/ puppies (cats/kittens too!) available that need homes. Adopting two together will give the puppies a playmate when the girls are at school and keep them from being lonely.

Definately get a dog from a rescue shelter. An an older dog would be better coz every one picks puppies first!

  • Margaret - 17 years ago

I think a kitten would be a superior choice. They are so much cleaner and cuter than a puppy. No terrible spots on the white house rug

Hypoallergenic is key - how about a Wheaton Terrier, a Port. Water Dog, Standard Poodle (without French show cut, please!), or some some Labradoodles - all of which can be found in rescue organizations. There are many great rescue groups in the greater DC area.

How about a Boston Terrier from the Boston Terrier rescue organization.
That's what I did 10 yrs. ago and it was the best decision I have ever made.

MALTESE ... keep him/her up with a puppy cut every 3 weeks ... and you have one great little white cottonball. My husband was allergic to all dogs - but this one is allowed all over the house and he has no issues. Also, they make great lap dogs, dont need extremely long walks like the bigger dogs. The only problem with them is that once you get one - you will want a second one so each girl has her own 'baby'.

Cavaliers Properly Bred have No Dander. Therfore people with allergies never have a problem. I do admit, I bathe my girls every week, so they smell fresh as we all Love to snuggle.
May I sugesst you look at Hedi Mohn CovingtonCavaliers.com.
I bred Cavs 20 years ago having about 4 litters. Heidi, is scupulous with her upbringing in a lovely enviornment, and doing her very best to insure there are not health problems with her Cavaliers, which have become rampant in the last 10 years with AKC involment in this breed.
I have a 8.5 year old female + a 11month old female of Heidi's, Priscilla (Prissy) and Pamela (Pammy) both Blenheims (red & white).
Cavaliers are "love sponges" as my sweet Husband says.
They are "comforting lap TOY spaniels" from which every Spaniel evolved. Their Toy Breed standard is 13# to 16#...never accept a big one.
They travel extaordinarily well, as long as they are with their People, and are welcome in many hotels, as well as the Parliment, and Theater in England.
Dear Mrs. Obama, your honesty is refreshing, and Your Girls and your Husband will do well with a Cavalier...they are not yappy, only loving period.
My husband & I live in Seattle, but were raised in Park Ridge.
If you choose to contact us, our telephone is 206.441.4077. I would love to extol the virtues of a Cavalier for your Family.
    Best regards,
    Kathleen Givens

My grandchildren are HIGHLY allergic but they have a Portuguese Water Dog that causes NO problems

Bichon Frisé is a great lap dog and is on the hypo-allergic list. They do need frequent grooming, but you can always request a "summer cut" to minimize that.

Also, there are a number of Rescued (Breed) organizations where a rescue dog with a specific breed can be adopted. It would resolve both issues.

Bichon's can be rescued here: http://www.smallpawsrescue.org/

Actually there are several American breeds...the Alaskan Malamute (not hypoallergenic though), the American Staffordshire Terrier, the Boston Terrier (as mentioned), several varieties of American hounds and foxhounds, the American Eskimo dog, a couple of American varieties of bulldog and the Carolina Singing Dog.

Of those, I like the AmStaff best :)

I just can't resist.... a black pit bull with lipstick would complement Micheal's dress worn on Nov 4, 2008. How a lady of such quality could have selected such a visually odd item is beyone me... my vote is for a Labrador, color doesn't matter! They are mellow dogs and would not bite reporters!

  • dorianne bugeja - 17 years ago

Wouldnt a stray dog be appropriate. A good example to people to adopt strays.

  • Darci - 17 years ago

How about a Whippet...they aren't on the list, but are just like Greyhounds only smaller!!! They are very devoted and love their humans and make great pets. They love to sleep. I think it would be a great choice for the Obama's new house!!!!

  • dfgffdg dg ddg - 17 years ago

a pittbull would do nice, especially with lipstick.

  • mark - 17 years ago

i had a mixed breed black lab for our family for 14 yrs we loved that darn dog

  • Don Zimmerman - 17 years ago

My vote is for the Boston Terrier. It is always dressed up in a tuxedo. They are the only truly American breed.

  • Laura Mondeau - 17 years ago

They should consider a Boston Terrier. Bostons are very adaptable to any home and are the most loving dogs. Low maintenance, High Joy! Bostons Rock!!!!

  • Sarah - 17 years ago

I think they should take the opportunity to set an example and adopt a puppy from a local shelter or rescue.

  • Elaine - 17 years ago

I heard today that one of the Obama daughters is allergic to some dogs. I still think they can adopt a rescue dog. There are alot of pure breed rescue shelters that could work for them in choosing a dog that will not affect the allergy. Dogs are the best. I have a 13 year old who is awesome!! Dog is my co-pilot - go for it!!!

  • Jean Fletcher - 17 years ago

We have a Welsh Terrier which is hypoallergenic, great with kids and animals. Would definitely recommend this type if daughter has allergies.

  • Debbie Mattatall - 17 years ago

It would be so great if the girls would be able to adopt from a shelter. It would be wonderful for the girls to realize the need of these defenseless animals and the love they are waiting to give.

  • wendy - 17 years ago

I think a Miniature Schnauzer would be a great pick for the girls. I have a daughter around their age, and my daughter so enjoys our Schnauzer. You get the benefit a really cute dog, with great personality that doesn't leave hair on the furniture. (big plus) THey're also hypo-allergenic for those that have pet allergies that may be visiting the White House.

  • flower - 17 years ago

there´s a lot ok street dogs all over the world.... It would be great if they could choose one of them for their first puppy.... they are also so cute....

  • Robin Pilger - 17 years ago

Adopt a retired greyhound! I hear the Obamas want to rescue and dog and need one that is hypoallergenic. Check and Check. They are wonderful, gentle dogs who would not be flustered by the hubbub of White House life.

The only problem is that it is hard to stop at just one greyhound!

  • Kirbyddog - 17 years ago

I think they should get a soft coated wheaten terrier! They are sweet, playful, kid friendly, and have hair not fur, so less of a problem for allergies! I love my 2 wheaties and I'm sure the Obamas would also! :0)
