Ryan- No offense, but if you want to play the statistics game, i can play that too. Try going 9 4A cross country meets undefeated and taking 2nd in a NATIONAL invitational meet. (Jackson Cross Country) 9 REGIONAL meets starts to not sound like so much... not to mention, what is your football teams national ranking?? Oh thats right, you probably dont have one. So next time you want to put down another teams accomplishments, DO A LITTLE RESEARCH!

Matt:
Thanks for helping me explain a little more about cross country, it's scoring and how individuals' times contribute to the overall teams' placement. I had meant to post earlier to Ryan to apologize for not making my position more clear.
Jackson XC girls today took 2nd place at NW Districts, with two runners finishing at 10th and 14th, but it took all the girls running their best race to score for the team and advance them to State.
Jackson XC boys took 1st place at NW Districts, with our top six runners finishing in the top 15 runners which pushed our team to the 1st place finish. An outstanding performance by senior, Ben Lance, finishing 1st and taking 4A District Champ, senior Ian McLeod taking 3rd, and junior Connor Frederickson taking 4th overall, followed by Sean Roe, Derek Woolsey and Mitch Briggs. Nathan Calacat came in 16th overall but still had an amazing personal race.
So, Ryan, and anyone else, I apologize if I wasn't clear about the importance of teamwork and team points when it comes to cross country.
On the Jackson cross country team we have found an amazing group of young athletes who truly believe in supporting and pushing each other to be the best they can be. And we have been privileged to be a part of the most supportive group of parents and fans.

Look Ryan, cross country is as much a team sport as is football. Sure, you could have one person be a standout and win the INDIVIDUAL title but it takes every person on the cross country team to contribute to the team title, so cross country is very much team sport. The same is in football, you could have a running back who is really good put up amazing numbers but without a defense to counter the other team, they still wont win. Just like I said above for cross country, you need the whole team, or varsity (which are the top seven runners usually) to make everything work and win. I'm not saying xc is more of a team sport as football but I think both are equal. And as for impressivness...I must say being ranked 23rd in the nation is more impressive than going undefeated. Going undeafeted is hard but getting a national ranking is even harder.

JS: Thanks for commenting. But I disagree with your suggestion that The Herald has overlooked the Marysville-Pilchuck football team this season. The Tomahawks have actually received MORE COVERAGE than any team, regardless of the sport. Here are some examples of stories we have published this fall, and remember this list doesn't include blog entries, notebook items, and games we didn't cover but included in a roundup report:

If you somehow missed all of these stories, it's definitely unfortunate. But you can use the links I included to read them now. The majority of these stories were on the cover of our sports section and several of them were our centerpiece for the day.

I don't understand why the Marysville-Pilchuck Football team hasn't had much press coverage this season. I see a lot written about Lake Stevens and the other local teams but hardly anything about this undefeated team. Why such bias??

Liz - The poll question was not about which sport was more challenging, it was which "teams" accomplishment was greater. Going undeafeated in 4A football is very difficult and rarely done. Unlike sports like cross country, it takes a "team" effort to win the game. You say in cross country that it's just you and the clock and that it takes the "individual's" time and place that wins the race. That doesn't sound like a team effort. Remember there is no "I" in team.
Liz - 17 years ago
Ryan: While you may not appreciate the hard work, blood, sweat and dedication that it takes to run a 5K on the cross country course, just you and the clock - no receivers to catch your pass or blockers to make your run "look good" at any level of competition, whether 2A or 4A, and just because you "suit up" you get to reap the glories of those who actually do the work if your team is ranked or wins a game - in sports such as cross country or swimming it takes the individual's time and place that wins the race ... Jackson HS boys cross country team is ranked #1 in the state and 23rd in the nation (4A by the way), and the Jackson HS girls cross country is ranked #6 in the state, both being ranked by the Washington State Cross Country Coaches' Association. There are how many football players on a team, many who never see time on the field, yet they can "boast" that "their" team is best ... contributing nothing on the field to better the team forward. I applaud each and every athlete's commitment to their sport,, whether they play or not - such as football - so please don't misunderstand me. However, in cross country, it takes every runner to score in the top 10 for the lowest score in order to win. There is no such thing as "the bench" in cross country. FYI

Cascade Bruin Tennis sent two doubles teams to the Wesco District Tennis Tournament after placing 1st and 3rd in the Wesco North Divisional Tournament. This comes after these same four players lead their team to place second, (under Snohomish who they upset in the Divisional Tournament), during league play. I believe that Bruin Tennis deserves great recognition for this achievement.
Ryan - 17 years ago
I'm sorry but winning your 2A cross country championship or a swimming duel meet is NOT in the same category as going 9-0 in 4A football and winning the WESCO AAAA North Championship. I appreciate the Herald's attempt to try to bring equity to their prep sports coverage, but when was the last time 5,000 people came to watch a tennis, swimming, or cross country event. I think poll should have been conducted by sport.

Meadowdale boys tennis is in the northwest districts championship finals, and they won the Westco south tournament. Meadowdale placed 1st and 2nd in singles at Wesco, and 2nd and 5th at doubles, with all six advancing to NW districts! Very impressive.

Everett HS girls’ soccer team is in the hunt for a 1st place LEAGUE trophy. They won their game last night against Monroe: 2-1. They play Lake Stevens tomorrow night (Thursday night) at Everett Memorial Stadium. This should be a totally exciting game because Lake Stevens is currently in 2nd place, right behind us. If we win, it will be the FIRST WESCO north League title for girls’ soccer. In fact, this is the first League title Everett will have won since boys’ track in 2005.

How about Arlington HS Volleyball for an impressive season with more wins then they have had in over 4 years. Great job the their 2nd year head coach.

Probably late to chime in --but Lynnwood HS sending a singles tennis player to the Districts hasn't happened for a very long time.......hats off to Coach McKinnon for his dedication and lots of patience!!!

Kevin, good point about the Lake Stevens football team. I can't imagine trying to play a game after watching one of your coaches collapse and get rushed to the hospital. That performance definitely says a lot about the Vikings' mental toughness. I'm glad to hear that coach Bigham is coaching again. He sure received a ton of support from the community. ... Joe, the Jackson football team is also very deserving of recognition, and the Timberwolves have received plenty of it in The Herald. Taylor Cox was one of our cover boys for our season preview (along with Edmonds-Woodway's Tony Heard). And clearly Jackson has all sorts of weapons in addition to Cox: Riley Carr, Andy Gay, John Wilde, Jordan Kellington.
I need to correct your remark about "our" preseason prediction - local coaches (not anyone at The Herald) picked Jackson to finish fifth in the Wesco South.
And sorry to disappoint you but, in my opinion, ineptness and bias are not a problem here. There's a reason I included "Other" in the poll and asked for comments: So readers could start a discussion based on their favorites.
Thanks for responding.

I propose Jackson winning the WESCO South Title with a victory over reigning champion Edmonds Woodway. Jackson did this without their star running back Taylor Cox. The Everett Herald's preseason prediction for Jackson was 5th in the conference!
The fact that this isn't on the main list is a testament to the ineptness of the Poll’s Writer(s) or some type of weird bias against Jackson Football. It has to be one or the other.
How about the Lake Stevens Vikings football team winning on opening night at Mariner after 1). Assistant Coach Kyle Bigham collapses and appears to die in full view of the team and players; 2) falling behind 21-0.
The Vikings rallied and won 36-34, and Bigham, who's heart stopped beating for several minutes, eventually recovered after surgery and is back to coaching.
