I would buy a refurb one, but it would not be as a primary laptop/pc. the cheap refurb ones make great linux boxes for testing and small servers like a fax/printer server etc.

I bought a 2.4ghz Black Apple MacBook in July of 2008. I’ve had it for over a year now, and I the machine has ran wonderfully from the day i bought it. I haven’t had anything go wrong with it- and it runs almost as fast as it did when I bought it (guaranteed I just installed Snow Leopard), but even at that, it was almost like buying a new one.

We supplied over 10,000 refurb laptops and desktops, routers....... last year to nationial retailers. We basically sold them at a cost, they marked it up 15% and the clients were still happy. You need a refurb desktop or laptop call Matt at Arch 610-284-0327

I've owned three laptops from new, and wore down the trackpads and keyboards and filled them with crumbs and used up all the recharge cycles. I've always assumed that 'refurbished' meant 'took a worn out laptop and wiped with it with polish,' so I'm interested to see that only two people report problems so far, and that many more have had only positive experiences. I may have a rethink.

I have bought Dell refurbished laptops and love the savings. I always pay a little more for the extended warranty in case of problems, but haven't had any. Even with the extra warranty it is still cheaper.

I bought an Apple powerbook G4 refurb and an HP dv1310 at the same time. I ended up having a minor problem with both. The HP just wouldn't turn on one day and I had to send it to HP who got it back to me within three days and even gave me a loaner pc to use in the mean time. Same thing with the Powerbook just wouldn't turn on one day it turned out to be a faulty ram slot. The guys at the Apple store fixed it for me. In both cases the problem was fixed for free and I was up and running like nothing happened. If you're buying refurb make sure you get an extended warranty. That is my advice. I know it detracts from the savings but in the long run it is worth it.

I bought a refurbished Dell Latitude D830. It worked fine while it was plugged into AC power, but it would constantly crash when running off the battery. Fortunately, I bought an upgraded warranty. The Dell Tech guys made many trips to my house until the problem was fixed. I'm currently on my 3rd motherboard, 2nd HD and 2nd Battery....but it is now working great...and has been for about 6 months. From the date I received the computer, it took about 3 weeks to get it into a good state...I would say that it was worth the price for saving $800 off retail.

  • wpns - 16 years ago

I don't trust the refurb process to discover and fix the problem the original owner sent it back for.

  • thirdchild - 16 years ago

Yes, fine experience. Bought a Dell Latitude from the Dell Outlet and as a result got a solid business model for the same amount I would have spent on a consumer model Dell. I think the key is buying business class... starts off as a better machine.

Got one from HP and it worked fine. Extended service plan with accidental coverage just like a new one, and when it dumped due to "pilot error" HP fixed it. Would do it again!

  • Pete - 16 years ago

Refurb HP dv5000. Had a problem with it out of the box but HP support was awesome. Free next day shipping both ways and had a working laptop before the week was over. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

I would be more than happy to buy a refurb laptop if I could ever actually find one that had the specs I require, I specifically need a 1920x1200 display on all my 15.4"s and I can never seem to catch a refurb model of the few laptops with that option that have that particular upgrade.

  • Dennis - 16 years ago

Bought a refurb HP Pavillion dv8000 3 years ago. Still working great. Came with a warranty from FRY'S ELECTRONICS. I WILL look for another refurb when the time comes.

I have bought 3 refurbed Lenovos from Tiger Direct! No problems associated with the refurbed units at all! Great values. I have a 14" portable and a 15" desktop replacement and I bought my girlfriend a great music/movie model. Most refurbs are from returned units with nothing wrong anyway, just hundreds cheaper!

  • ggf - 16 years ago

Unless I can see the refurbished product (like in a store), I won't buy it. You don't know what was wrong with it unless you see it. There is a big difference between a hardware failure and a scuffed up case but online retailers never say why it was refurbed.

  • Frank - 16 years ago

Multiple refurbed Thinkpads (T and R series) directly from the Lenovo Outlet at http://stores.channeladvisor.com/LenovoOutlet/Notebook/Refurbished/

Great price, great machines, have worked great since I bought them.

  • Jim - 16 years ago

I bought a used IBM Thinkpad off eBay. Worked like a charm for about two years, which is one year longer than the Dell Inspiron we bought new to replace it.

A more expensive / high end laptop, like the Macbook or ThinkPad, I wouldn't hesitate to buy refurbished. The lower end laptops I've bought used or had as hand-me-downs didn't hold up nearly as well.

  • Michael - 16 years ago

I Purchased my MacBook Pro refirbished along with a Apple T.V. refurbished online at apple.com and would highly recommend anyone doing the same. Both came looking brand new and will do it again when it comes time to upgrade. I have told quite a few people and they have done the same and have been very happy.

I bought a refurb black MacBook in July of '06. I was a bit reluctant at first because it wasn't that long after the MacBooks were plagued by a bad batch of motherboards. We had an issue with many of the refurbs we'd bought at the non-profit org I worked for at the time, but by then the problem appeared resolved. I took the plunge and have had no issues. There was no sign it had ever been used before. I did buy AppleCare just in case, and it was a smart decision. Almost a year in my battery was acting up, and I didn't know why. Turns out it was at the end of it's lifespan. I didn't expect AppleCare to cover it, but they swapped it out for me. Then a couple of months ago, the iSight camera stopped working. They sent it off to be fixed, and replaced not only the camera board but the keyboard (I bet they found a good deal of my dog's extra fine hair contained within). But at two years old, I wasn't surprised that something like the cam would fail. But, AppleCare paid for itself.

I would easily buy refurb again.

I bought a refurbished Gateway laptop from Tiger Direct. It's run like a well-oiled angel for the last year. It's missing the silver "t" in the gateway label, but I can live with my cheap and powerful "Ga-eway"

I've bought three refurbs - Sony from Refurb Depot, Compaq from Computer Geeks, Toshiba from company in-house program (more used than refurbed)

All were great experiences. All lasted a long time (two still around after 4+ years) and were 30%+ off price of an equivalent new machine.

Bought two desktops from computer geeks too. One DOA exchanged, but otherwise fine.

  • Eric - 16 years ago

I bought a refurbished MacBook from Apple. It looked brand new and has worked perfectly!

  • Joshua - 16 years ago

My old laptop was dying and I was on a tight budget. I kept an eye out on ebay and was able to purchase a refurbished Dell Inspiron 1501. It was near perfect, a few scratches on the lid. I formatted the hard drive (got rid of vista), loaded Ubuntu on and I haven't had one issue with it.

  • Daniel - 16 years ago

We have purchased refurbs from Apple several times and wouldn't hesitate to buy more. A guy from Apple once told me the refurbs go through a more stringent Q/A process than factory machines do. Plus, they come with the standard Apple warranty and are still eligible for AppleCare within the first year should you so desire.

  • Jim - 16 years ago

I've bought a used laptop on ebay. It's still going strong. I wouldn't buy a refurb... refurb to me says "borked once, will bork again." I know I have no basis for that judgment, but I'd rather be safe and pay for a new one.

  • Aaron - 16 years ago

I bought a refurb macbook. Good as new. Refurb's vary so much by company and where you get it from.

Bought a refurb Macbook Pro off of Apple.com. Love it still a year later. Completely worth the price.

www.computer-show.com . I've bought 3 laptops and 2 desktops (all Dell)from them now all have been in good condition and have worked great.

  • Ted - 16 years ago

I've always had good luck with used laptops, both Apple and PC (Dell).

  • Rob - 16 years ago

Refurb MacBook from apple. Came like it was new, just in a different box. MacBook is about a year old now. Very happy with the refurb! Also got about $300 off the price!!
