What makes them think that they deserve more than a 100% raise when they cannot give firemen, policemen and city workers max 5% then they turn around and double business liscenses which is running business out of Birmingham and causing loss of tax base for the city. All they are doing is puting more of a tax burden on the citizens of Birmingham.

I believe that since the city council is paid below that of a teacher that yes they deserve SOME raise, however in this time of economic worry, I believe that over 100% raise is excessive. They need a middle ground.

While the amount of the requested raise is illogical, I suspect the pay for such a key position in our community is too low. I would like to see NBC 13 do a compensation survey of similarly sized cities with the city council form of government and see what their pay levels are. We must pay our government officials a fair wage if we want competent, intelligent, strategic thinking candidates to run.

A $30,000 pay raise for each City Council Person? Not just no but HELL NO! Talk about rewarding CEO's for ineptitude- this is a bigger rip-off than AIG's retreats. Have these people checked the economic pulse of this community? A bankrupt county and now this. File it under "Boundless Greed."

No wonder the county and the city is in Financial Trouble with thinking like that! With people losing jobs, pay of most employess cut way below what this commission wants to get. A lot of intelligence shown! Thier decissions has caused the worst financial mess in US History - could possibly be the worst bankruptcy in US History and wanting a raise!

I'd give them about two cents raise, what they've been worth this year. City Council is a PARTTIME job. Just ask a council person if they have another job, if they are willing to quit it for this big raise (and then vote 'em out). Who do they think they are, Legislators in the Community College system?
THEY KNEW what the salary was when they were running for office. It must have seemed allright then, considering how much money it takes to run successfully for the Council. Let them get some streets paved first. And if they don't make enough money for council involvement, let them resign or not run for re-election and let some else run for the office, knowing what the salary is. This is just morally nauseating, disgusting. Big Time council persons, feet of clay. Feet of clay.

I wonder why the Birmingham city council can ask for a double pay raise when everyone who is in the know has been told that they were not even capable of keeping the sewage crisis contained at any level, and if they are overworked and underpayed what have they done to deserve anything more than they have been given? Where is the logic in council pay raises when the city is looming over bankruptcy?

These elected officials say they work for us? What the heck this is the only thing they have agreed on.Put this money into the city or even toward the sewer pay off.

This is crazy. That position is a part time position. Most of the council have other jobs like being lawyers. Our police cannot get a decent raise but they sit up there and think they deserve that much of a raise. Mass transit in Birmingham does not exist and they want a raise? Please, if they pass this, I hope none of them will enjoy the money for long because when their terms are up, we should vote them all out.

The only way that I would Agree to a Pay raise is for the Whole Counsil Is that they are there 8 hours a day and 5 days a week. That means that they will have to give up their other Jobs.

i dont think they derseve a $3 raise, much less a $30,000 raise. how selfish and inappropriate during a financial crisis like the one our country state and Jeff County inofitself are experiencing. That type of attitude of "serve ourselves first and then serve the citizens who elected us" is what's wrong with our govt leadership. How greedy.
